Kansas City Portrait Locations

With the start of school finally underway for all of Kansas City, and now being the time to start thinking of High School Senior Pictures, I thought I would share a list of some of my favorite Places for Portrait Photography Sessions. There are numerous location around the city of course and I am just touching on a handful here. Most of these locations can be reached in about 20-30 min. from anywhere in the city. I chose these locations because some of them are very close to one another and offer different looks all within a short distance. Remember, Fall isn't far off, so wether you are looking for Senior Pictures, Engagement Photos, or Family Photos, call and set your appointment now before all the best colors are gone. Till next time...    Senior Portrait Ideas

  1. Union Station: Built in 1914, Union Station is a true Kansas City landmark. The building features massive windows, beautiful architecture and a wonderful fountain out front. Also a plus is the fact that the Crossroads and Liberty Memorial are both within walking distance! One thing of note, Union Station does ask for advance notice for professional photographs to be made there, plus they require a permit. Cost for the permit is $75.

  2. Liberty Memorial: The Liberty Memorial certainly has a distinct advantage of providing a one-of-a-kind view of the Kansas City skyline. It’s beautiful construction and architecture provide clean, elegant backgrounds. Though it can be a bit windy, because of it's architectural style, the location is perfect for candid Black and White photography, especially couples.

  3. The West Bottoms: The trend these days in Senior and even Engagement photography is to place the models in an urban environment. It doesn't get much more urban than The West Bottoms. With historic buildings, brick streets, painted alleys and doorways, The West Bottoms is one of your best bets when it comes to an urban setting.

  4. The Crossroads: The Crossroads District is an extremely popular location. The Crossroads is another urban environment and presents a good mix of architecture, both new and old. The entire district has become the creative center of Kansas City. You might want to rethink scheduling a session for an evening on the first Friday of each month though, that’s when the infamous First Fridays art walk takes place. Lots of people attend these events which can make photography very difficult.Kaufman Memorial Gardens Portraits

  5. Loose Park: Located at Wornall Road and 51st Street, Loose Park is probably one of the more popular locations for Kansas City photographers. It’s an awesome place with a Rose Garden and many nice bridges and older trees, plus lots of blooming plants. When a client suggest Loose Park, I sometimes try and suggest other locations because it really is so popular with Photographers. On a weekend in the Spring or Fall, it can be difficult to work around all the people.

  6. The Country Club Plaza: It’s a Kansas City institution and a popular choice for Kansas City engagement and Senior pictures alike. The Plaza is well known for its Spanish-style architecture, which makes for some great backdrops. The holidays are a very lovely time to shoot pictures there as well since the entire location is lit in holiday lighting.

  7. The Kansas City Garment District: The Historic Garment District is located between 6th and 11th streets and Washington and Wyandotte streets. Many of these buildings date back to the 1870s and are on the National Register of Historic Places. There are many wonderful doorways and alleys for some great photo opportunities whether it's Engagement or Senior photo's.

  8. Antioch Park: Located at 67th and Antioch in Overland Park, Antioch Parks picture possibilities are awesome. There is a Rose Garden along with beautiful lakes, trails and landscaping. They also have a small play town that can offer some fun and unique pictures. It really is a great place and very convenient.

  9. Shawnee Mission Park: A Johnson County Landmark, Shawnee Mission Park is an expansive space with many trails, water features and scenic areas. It is a great location for Kansas City engagement photo's as well as Senior Portrait's.

  10. Kaufmann Memorial Gardens: Located at 4800 Rockhill Road, the Ewing and Muriel Kauffman Memorial Garden is small but offers a lot for such a small place. It doesn’t require you to pack your walking shoes like Loose Park or Shawnee Mission Park and features an intense amount of color, good light and beautiful backdrops. It's also located very close to the Plaza and the Nelson Museum of Fine Art.
